November Book Club Selection - Kathy

One Shot by Lee Child

Below is a description of the book (taken from Amazon) we will be reading in November.  We will discuss this book on Wednesday, December 3rd.

Six shots. Five dead.  One heartland city thrown into a state of terror.  But within hours the cops have it solved:  a slam-dunk case.  Except for one thing.  The accused man says:  You got the wrong guy.  Then he says:  Get Reacher for me.  And sure enough, from the world he lives in --no phone, no address, no commitments--ex-military investigator Jack Reacher is coming.  In Lee Child's astonishing new thriller, Reacher's arrival will change everything--about a case that isn't what it seems, about lives tangled in baffling ways, about a killer who missed one shot--and by doing so give Jack Reacher one shot at the truth....

The gunman worked from a parking structure just thirty yards away--point-blank range for a trained military sniper like James Barr.  His victims were in the wrong place at the wrong time.  But why does Barr want Reacher at his side?  There are good reasons why Reacher is the last person Barr would want to see.  But when Reacher hears Barr's own words, he understands.  And a slam-dunk case explodes.  Soon Reacher is teamed with a young defense lawyer who is working against her D.A. father and dueling with a prosecution team that has an explosive secret of its own.  Like most things Reacher has known in life, this case is a complex battlefield.  But, as always, in battle, Reacher is at his best.

Moving in the shadows, picking his spots, Reacher gets closer and closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings.  And for Reacher, the only way to take him down is to know his ruthlessness and respect his cunning and then match him shot for shot....

August Book Club Selection - Joyce

Eyes on You:  A Novel of Suspense by Kate White

Below is a description of the book (taken from Amazon) we will be reading in August.  We will discuss this book on Wednesday, September 3rd.

From New York Times bestselling author Kate White comes a riveting psychological suspense in which a media star must battle a malevolent enemy who may be disturbingly close to her.

After losing her on-air job two years ago, television host Robin Trainer has fought her way back and now she’s hotter than ever. With her new show climbing in the ratings and her first book a bestseller, she’s being dubbed a media double threat.
But suddenly, things begin to go wrong. Small incidents at first: a nasty note left in her purse; her photo shredded. But the obnoxious quickly becomes threatening when the foundation the makeup artist uses burns Robin’s face. It wasn’t an accident—someone had deliberately doctored with the product.
An adversary with a dark agenda wants to hurt Robin, and the clues point to someone she works with every day. While she frantically tries to put the pieces together and unmask this hidden foe, it becomes terrifyingly clear that the person responsible isn’t going to stop until Robin loses everything that matters to her . . . including her life.

Discussion:   The best part about book club is we get the opportunity to travel everywhere!  We've been to Australia, London, Paris, China, Mt. Everest,  Atlantic Ocean, etc. in the last few years.  This month we all took a journey through Kabul to Paris to San Fransisco and to the Greek island of Tinos.  Some of us enjoyed the journey, others would have rather stayed home!!!!  Another book with many mixed reviews.  The author jumped around in time which didn't flow with all readers.  Some of us really appreciated some thought provoking comments.  It was brought up that Khaled Hosseini's first 2 books were better and this one was a disappointment.

BCDP:  Sherry won this month's BCDP!  Melissa brought in a delicious strawberry, whipped topping cake which we devoured!  Mmmm!!!
Sherry opening the BCDP!  A water bottle and fan!

Recommendation:   Very mixed reviews on And the Mountains Echoed.   Some members did not appreciate the author's style of  jumping around in time.  Other's enjoyed the book.  You may want to research the book and decide for yourself if it's your type!

July Book Club Selection - Michaelene

And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini

Below is a description of the book (taken from Amazon) we will be reading in July.  We will discuss this book on Wednesday, July 30th.

Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations.  In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most.  Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe--from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos--the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.

Discussion:   It never ceases to fail, someone comes up with a new, creative idea that bolsters our book club!  After the month of May's surprise author visit,  we moved onto June with a "themed" field trip.  Melissa organized a great day at the Crete Woman's Club Garden Walk.  This event included 6 garden views, lunch buffet at Lincolnshire Country Club, and shopping with town vendors.  One thing we realized instantly was that these gardens were NOT "forgotten"!  Many were breathtaking and absolutely beautiful.   We all stole some great ideas to enhance our own gardens.

Following the garden walk, we returned to Melissa's place for our book club discussion.  We were served chips and salsa/guacamole, Melissa's frozen sangria, and Tracy's oreo cheesecake parfaits.  Our discussion began with book club questions we found online.  A couple members loved the book, while others felt it was too long and drawn out.  Many mixed reviews!  Even though we had differing opinions, we maintained a great discussion.  As usual, we went off on a tangent discussing vaccines and personal stories that stemmed from the book.

BCDP:  Tracy served her oreo parfaits in colored cups.  The prize winner was the lucky person who ended up with the red cup.  Melissa won a sparkly butterfly rock for her garden!

Recommendation:   Very mixed reviews on The Forgotten Garden.  The book was rather long, and some members did not appreciate the author's style of  jumping around in time.  Other's felt it was a wonderful read.  You may want to research the book and decide for yourself if it's your type!

Discussion:   Although May's selection happened to be our 3rd consecutive murder mystery, ACsBC enjoyed the book!  Kim decided to "theme" our meal by serving a hot, delicious breakfast.  Eggs, hashbrowns, donuts, fruit, bagels.....who doesn't love breakfast for dinner!?!?!?!?!  Kim came up with this idea based on Maggie Quinn, one of the main characters, who never slept at night.  Only in the day!

Not only did Kim serve a great meal, but she surprised the book club......the author, Dianne Gallagher, who resides in Frankfort, IL, made a special appearance and joined our discussion!  The doorbell rang after dinner...or should I say breakfast?!  And we were wondering who was crashing ACsBC...  Kim introduced her and we all almost fell off our chairs!!!  We absolutely loved having an author join us.  She answered many of our questions and we were delighted she took the time out of her busy schedule.  This book will eventually be a part of a trilogy.  Many of us are excited to read on, and learn what will become of Maggie Quinn!  We'd also like to add, if you are involved in a book club, Dianne Gallagher would definitely make a surprise appearance!

BCDP:  Kim put our names in a hat and Tracy was picked!  She won a Yankee Candle and dark chocolate!  Yum!  Tracy is responsible for the dessert in June, along with hosting.  Happy Reading!

Recommendation:   We all recommend Too Dark to Sleep  and are looking forward to this new author's future books!
